This week, California cannabis updates came in from Mountain View, Mendota, and Kern County. Here’s what cannabis news you need to know for the week of June 17, 2019.

Mountain View, California

Mountain View, California continues to be adverse to issuing cannabis business licenses in their jurisdiction. The City Council met to adopt a few ordinances prohibiting retail cannabis businesses within the city. The ordinance comprehensively prohibited any storefront retail cannabis businesses within the city limits. In addition, the city adopted a resolution establishing a cannabis tax rate of 9% of gross receipts.

Mendota, California

Mendota, California is looking to bring cannabis licensing to their jurisdiction. The City Council passed Ordinance 19-06 to “eliminate the ban on cannabis dispensaries and to establish regulations for commercial cannabis businesses.”

The Council will allow one dispensary for 20,000 residents. According to the 2017 census, there were 11,438 residents in Mendota; it will be interesting to see how Mendota approaches their licensing and permitting process.

Kern County, California

Kern County also looks to be coming online with their recent county meeting results. The county will begin exploring the format, details, and resources needed for a medical cannabis ordinance to be voted on in the March 3, 2020 election. As we’ve seen in other counties and districts, bringing medical cannabis on board is usually the first step to opening licensing for adult-use cannabis as well.
